A Safe ‘Home for the Holidays’ – Get Ready for Thanksgiving!

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Tis the season for turkey dinners, gift-giving and—inevitably for most of us—throngs of descending house guests. So now is the ideal time to make sure your home is safe and prepped for your friends’ and family’s arrival. Below are a few tips to help make your holiday-time maintenance a bit easier so that you can get on with celebrating the joys of the season.

Front Door On ThanksgivingWalkways and Stairs

Are your walkways and exterior steps free of trip hazards? Have areas that tend to be slippery when wet been addressed? Are handrails leading to bedrooms or basements secure and able to withstand sufficient force if grabbed suddenly? These areas may not be easy to navigate for infrequent guests, especially in the dark or low light conditions. Take a walk in all these areas to make sure walkways are safe and stairs and handrails are secure for your approaching holiday guests.

Breathe Easy
Do you remember the last time you changed your furnace filter? If you have a forced air furnace with a disposable or electrostatic filter, every 30-90 days is recommended. Why? Dirty filters hold dust and allergens which will recirculate back into  the air. Also, your blower will have to work harder to push air through the clogged filter, which shortens the life of the unit and costs you more on utility bills.

Baby It’s Cold Inside
Do you know the age of your water heater? Have you drained it in the last six months? While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee your water heater will get you through the holidays, it does give you an idea of the condition of the appliance and any sediment buildup. Gas water heaters typically last 8-12 years, electric 10-14 years.

A Healthy Hearth
Have you had your fireplace serviced by a professional in the last year? Is the damper in working order? For gas fireplaces, a damper should never be allowed to be fully closed. Also remember, do not burn gift wrap in the fireplace. It can throw off dangerous sparks and produce a chemical buildup in the home that could cause an explosion.

Avoid Sewer Line Clogs
OK, sewage is most likely not the first thing on your mind when it comes to preparing for your holiday festivities, but knowing your plan for preventing sewer line clogs is very important. Make sure your guests know to never place grease, oil, sauces, gravy, cookie dough, etc. in the garbage disposal. Be sure they also know to never flush clog-forming items like diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, condoms, or rags down the toilet.

Not Home for the Holidays?

If you plan to be away from home for the holidays, have a friend or family member watch your home and collect items like mail and newspapers, which can be signs of your absence to strangers. Make sure you also give them your phone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency.

Who Invented Electric Christmas Lights?

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Email us at servicerequest@leinbachservices.com

Question:

Who invented electric Christmas lights?

Answer:

Thomas Edison and Edward Johnson (1880 &1882) and Albert Sadacca (1917).

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, created the very first strand of electric lights. During the Christmas season of 1880, these strands were strung around the outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory. Railroad passengers traveling by the laboratory got their first look at an electrical light display. But it would take almost forty years for electric Christmas lights to become the tradition that we all know and love.

Before electric Christmas lights, families would use candles to light up their Christmas trees. This practice was often dangerous and led to many home fires. Edward H. Johnson put the very first string of electric Christmas tree lights together in 1882. Johnson, Edison’s friend and partner in the Edison’s Illumination Company, hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree. Not only was the tree illuminated with electricity, it also revolved.

However, the world was not quite ready for electrical illumination. There

first set of lights for sale

was a great mistrust of electricity and it would take many more years for society to decorate its Christmas trees and homes with electric lights. Some credit President Grover Cleveland with spurring the acceptance of indoor electric Christmas lights. In 1895, President Cleveland requested that the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by hundreds of multi-colored electric light bulbs.

On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree with 3,000 electric lights on the Ellipse located south of the While House.

Until 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of Christmas lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. The wiring of electric lights was very expensive and required the hiring of the services of a wireman, our modern-day electrician. According to some, to light an average Christmas tree with electric lights before 1903 would have cost $2000.00 in today’s dollars.

While Thomas Edison and Edward H. Johnson may have been the first to create electric strands of light in 1880/1882, it was Albert Sadacca who saw a future in selling electric Christmas lights. The Sadacca family owned a novelty lighting company and in 1917 Albert, a teenager at the time, suggested that its store offer brightly colored strands of Christmas lights to the public. By the 1920’s Albert and his brothers organized the National Outfit Manufacturers Association (NOMA), a trade association. NOMA soon became NOMA Electric Co., with its members cornering the Christmas light market until the 1960’s.

Today we expect to see the holiday season become aglow with electric strands of light. Think of the variety and range of Christmas lights available in today’s market. We can be grateful to Thomas Edison, Edward H. Johnson and Albert Sadacca for illuminating our holiday season.

What to Know about Water Damage and Home Insurance

Friday, October 14th, 2011
By Stephanie Ryder
Feb 15, 2010

What to know about water damage and your home insurance Did you know that water damage is one of the most commonly cited reasons in claims on home insurance? This should not come as a total surprise considering the many possible causes of water damage – heavy rain, bursting of pipes, and the bathtub accidentally overflowing.

Despite the fact that water damage is a common claim, not all claims for damages due to similar causes will be paid by insurance companies. In fact, claiming on home insurance against water damage can be a tad bit complicated, if not downright tricky.

Claims are dealt with separately, taking into account the particular circumstances behind the damage. Essentially, the damages covered by your home insurance are those related to the risks specified in your policy.

Water damages usually covered by home insurance

In general, your home insurance probably covers water damages caused by accidents like when pipes suddenly burst, there’s a leak in the roof, or when water overflows from the sink, bathtub, dishwasher, or washing machine. But you will most likely need to prove that what happened was totally unintentional and beyond your control.

If a pipe bursts due to overheating, for example, and it happened at night when everybody was fast asleep, you might be able to collect for the damage if there’s no chance that you could have known that the temperature would continue to rise.

Damages caused by an overflowing bathtub may also be covered if you were in the middle of something that you cannot immediately drop to attend to the faucet. Forgetting to turn off the water may fly under the radar if you can present a plausible reason for the lapse.

When a home appliance suddenly breaks down and water overflows, the resulting damages will most likely be paid for by your insurance company. Note that the insurer’s liability is often limited to the water-related damages and does not extend to the repair of your appliance. You have to pay out of your own pocket for the appliance to be repaired.

It is also a good general rule that your homeowners insurance will cover damages that ensue when your roof leaks rain water due to strong storm winds.

Water damages generally not covered by home insurance

Home insurance coverage often does not include coverage for water damages that can be traced to neglect or poor maintenance. Take leaking roofs, for example. While damages caused by rain water are usually covered, the insurance may not pay if it can prove that your roof produced a leak because you have not maintained it at all.

Your home insurance also may not cover water damages caused by frozen pipes that burst. If a pipe freezes and bursts, and your insurance company concludes that it could have been prevented for one reason or another, you may be out of luck. In the end, it is best to take precautionary steps to avoid the occurrence of such incidents.

In addition, keep in mind that floods are usually excluded in home insurance coverage. If you need insurance against the risk of flooding because your location is susceptible to high waters, you will most likely need to obtain separate flood insurance.

How to protect your homeowners insurance claims

One of the best ways to make sure that your insurance company will not reject your claims on water damages is to maintain your house properly. This way, you eliminate a lot of opportunity to shift blame on you and your lack of maintenance.

However, there is probably no need to conduct monthly house maintenance. Perform an annual check of the entire house and have the necessary repair and maintenance work done at that time. This may include an inspection of your pipes, ceiling, roof, and water system.

You have invested much in your home and should take steps to protect it, its occupants, and contents from all possible risks. You can count on your home insurance to provide that protection but you still remain responsible for the regular upkeep and maintenance.

Do your part to prevent water damages and your home insurance should take care of those that you cannot control.

9 Ways to Prevent Getting the Flu

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

With the movies like Contagion and Outbreak, one can become paranoid about germs and viruses everywhere.  But there are ways to help prevent you and your family from getting sick.woman in bed sick

  1. Germs can live on surfaces for 2 hours up to 48 hours. Use soap and warm water – and rub hands for 15 to 20 seconds. Sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice while rubbing, to keep track of the time.   You can also keep  gel sanitizers with you.
  2. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. “You should sneeze into a tissue or paper towel,”  according to James Mamary, MD, a pulmonologist with Temple Lung Center at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia.   “If you don’t have those with you, you can sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Just make sure you put that clothing into the wash at night.”
  3. Don’t touch your face. According to a study at Berkeley, the students in the study touched their face an average of 16 times an hour.
  4. Install an UV light in your heating/cooling system. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 10% of all colds are caught outdoors, 90% are caught indoors! Numerous studies have proven that UV light destroys mold, fungi, spores, bacteria, germs, and viruses.
  5. Get plenty of sleep.A recent Carnegie Mellon study found that sleeping 8 hours a night (instead of 7 or fewer) can make you 30% less likely to develop a cold—a sign that sleep plays an important immune-boosting role.
  6. Eat well balanced meals. Proteins are essential to help your body maintain and build strength. Lean meat, poultry, fish, legumes, dairy, eggs, and nuts and seeds are good sources of protein. The FDA recommends that adults eat 50 grams of protein per day. By eating foods high in protein, we also get the benefit of other healing nutrients such as vitamins B6 and B12, both of which contribute to a healthy immune system.
  7. If you are sick with a flu–like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  8. Get a flu shot.
  9. Make sure you change your air filters in your heating/cooling unit. The average person breathes in about 32,000 pints (18,185 liters) of air every day. Those 32,000 pints contain about 1,120,000,000 particles of dust and most of those particles are 3 microns or smaller in size. Using pleated filters that are the right size will capture the virus and prevent it from getting through your duct work.

Leinbach Services Inc. is your  one-stop-shop for all of your installation, repair and maintenance needs regarding electrical work, plumbing work, heating /air conditioning, and handyman needs for residential customers. For commercial customers, we also repair and/or replace parking lot signs, parking lot lights and your HVAC requirements.
