Check out this new Thermostat.  It is the first thermostat that learns from you. It can sense when you have left the house and will adjust the temperature of your house so you will not be heating or cooling  your house when you are not there.  It will build a schedule in about a week to adapt to you.  It will also show you how much energy you have used.

One of the neat things about this thermostat is that it uses your WIFI connection to keep any eye on the weather and do updates to your indoor temperature.  You can also adjust your home’s temperature from your smartphone or computer.

A Note from the CEO…

Greetings!

2011 was a banner year. We exceeded our employment goal by almost 350% and our investment goal by a 170%. We saw the location of seven new businesses in Sullivan County and the expansion of seven of our existing business or industries. For the 20th year, Sullivan County and its cities received certification as a Three-Star Community. The Three-Star Benchmark III level obtained will result in continued opportunities and dollar savings for our communities. Expansion Solutions Magazine, selected NETWORKS as one of the Top Five for automotive, an award which recognizes a community’s efforts in the recruitment and expansions of automotive industries.

Expanding Economic Base
In 2011, two new automotive parts manufacturers located in Sullivan County. C&F Group of Galway Ireland, moved into the 110,000 sq. ft. former Magneti Marelli building in Kingsport and DLH Industries, of Canton, Ohio located its newest manufacturing facility in a 64,000 sq. ft. building in Bristol.

C&F Manufacturing, USA

C&F will invest $12.5 million and create 450 new jobs over the next four-year period.  The company will manufacture decorative and functional trim for the automotive industry, racking for the data management industry and possibly small wind turbines at its new facility.

DLH Industries, Inc.

DLH will hire 25 initially and increase that number to at least 75 within a year. DLH is a global supplier of engineered plastic solutions in the automotive industry and other markets. DLH recently received the General Motors 2010 Global Supplier of the Year award. This award is granted to only 82 of GM’s nearly 20,000 suppliers worldwide.

Other new businesses locating in Sullivan County during 2011 include ASR Systems, an asphalt shingle recycling operation in Bristol; Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories which acquired Glaxo Pharmaceuticals; 1-800 RADIATOR, a wholesale radiator parts distributor and AAM Group, an automotive accessories marketing company.

There were several expansions of existing businesses to include Diversified Power International, a manufacturer of battery chargers; Exide Technologies, which added a new product line; Strategic Placement, a video production company; SW Services, a machining operation; Triad Packaging, which consolidated its operations in Bristol; Heritage Manufacturing, a producer of wooden crates and American Tire Distributors.

One of the biggest announcements of the year was Sprint Telecenters’ plans to consolidate area operations into a new 48,000 sq. ft. building on Sprint Drive off Tennessee Highway 394.  Over 600 employees will be housed at this location.

Major Improvements
An Executive Conference wing was completed for MeadowView’s Conference Center. Major renovations were completed on the former Kingsport Press property to include a new Food City, Farmer’s Market and a new office complex.  New restaurants in Kingsport included a Buffalo Wild Wings, Longhorn Steak House and Biggies.  Downtown Kingsport saw a new 3-level parking garage.  A new fire station for the Rock Springs area was built.
In Bristol, on State Street, an older building is renovated to accommodate a new restaurant 620 on State”.
New businesses opening in Blountville include a new Fireworks Supermarket, Roadrunner Market and
a new office location for Farm Bureau.
Looking Ahead to 2012
Several major transportation projects are underway which will enhance economic development efforts to include the widening of TN Highway 75 airport connector and a new welcome center being constructed off I-26 near Kingsport.

In 2012, we are looking forward to employment increases with the opening of the new Sprint Telecenters. NETWORKS is also currently working with several projects which could further contribute significantly to local employment gains.

Preparing Homes, Sidewalks, Pipes For Cold Winter Weather

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

POSTED: 5:39 pm EST January 3, 2012BRISTOL, Virginia — With temperatures down into the low teens and even single digits Tuesday night, staying warm can be a challenge. Even while you’re keeping the heat up inside, parts of your home could be taking a beating.John Icenhour does everything he can to avoid the bitter cold.”Outside it’s about 20 some degrees. You’d freeze if you had that temperature in your house,” Icenhour said. That’s when his heat pump started having problems; he didn’t hesitate to call in the experts at Farnsworth Heating and Air Conditioning. “The phone rings off the hook. People just go into the season unprepared sometimes,” said owner Mike Ferrell.Ferrell told us many go without getting their heat pumps serviced each year, and that can lead to problems when it’s time to crank up the heat. “Any machinery that runs in this type of weather is under a lot of strain, and typically heat pumps, they’re working very hard this time of year,” Ferrell explained. The sidewalks along your home are also an easy target for ice when it gets this cold, but did you know basic rock salt won’t always do the trick? “Certain products that, you know, some of them need to stay around freezing or you know 10 degrees above,” said Mike Geffers, assistant manager at the Lowe’s in Bristol, Virginia. But there are some other alternatives out there to keep your sidewalks safe. For example, liquid magnesium can melt snow and ice down when temperatures are negative 10 degrees. But once you’re inside your home, the potential for problems don’t stop. Pipes, especially older ones, can freeze and later bust. “Leaving a trickle in the kitchen sink or a bathroom sink that is up against an outside exterior wall is the one that you want to do that to,” explained Stephen Austin, a technician for Leinbach Services, Inc.Be sure you disconnect your water hose from the outside spigot, and check where it comes inside. “Take your hands and put your hand around the inside of the pipe, if you can feel wind coming in from the outside, then that definitely needs to be sealed,” Austin said. When you’re all prepared, it makes staying inside that much cozier. “It’s just good to be warm!” said Icenhour. If you find out tomorrow that your pipes did freeze tonight, don’t panic. You can thaw them out slowly with a hairdryer or light bulb. If they do burst, you can always call in an expert. I’ve learned a repair will run you around $200 to $300.

9 Reasons to Know When is it Time to Replace Your Heating/Air Conditioning Unit

Certain telltale signs indicate it’s time to consider replacing heating and cooling equipment, or improving the performance of your overall system. It may be time to call a professional contractor to help you make a change if:

1. Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.

Consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.

2. Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.

Consider replacing with an ENERGY STAR qualified furnace, which is 15% more efficient than a conventional furnace. If you have a boiler, consider replacing with an ENERGY STAR qualified boiler that is 5% more efficient than a new, standard model.

3. Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up.

Your cooling or heating equipment may have become less efficient.

4. Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.

Improper equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation could be the cause.

5. No one is home for long periods of the day and you do not have a programmable thermostat.

Install a programmable thermostat or have a good contractor install one and instruct you on its use — to start saving energy and money while they’re away or sleeping.

6. Your home has humidity problems.

Poor equipment operation, inadequate equipment, and leaky ductwork can cause the air to be too dry in the winter or too humid in the summer.

7. Your home has excessive dust.

Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.

8. Your heating or cooling system is noisy.

You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.

9. Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.

That means your energy use at home is above average and you’re probably paying more than you need to on energy bills.
