Nationwide scam targets utility customers

Please review this previous post about a scam that recently targeted a JCPB customer:

Thanks to our friends at the American Public Power Association (APPA) for reporting on a multi-state scam that has targeted utility customers across the country. The scam aims to steal payments and identity information using in-person solicitations, social media, fliers, phone calls and text messages. Victims have been reported in states such as California, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas and Florida.

A multi-state scam has targeted utility customers across the country. The scam aims to steal payments and identity information using in-person solicitations, social media, fliers, phone calls and text messages. Victims have been reported in states such as California, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas and Florida.

Customers have been told that President Obama has approved special funding through the Federal Reserve Bank for utility bill assistance, but there is no such funding.

Scammers are asking customers for personal information, such as Social Security numbers. They then provide victims with a fraudulent bank routing number with which to pay their utility bills.

Gainesville, Fla., Regional Utilities has over 40 customers that used the fraudulent bank routing numbers to pay their utility bills. GRU said the utility believes customers are passing on the routing number to each other via text messages.

“We strive to make our customers aware of potential scams so they can protect themselves from becoming victims of identity theft and other fraudulent activities,” said Bill Shepherd, GRU’s director of customer operations. “Customers should always proceed with caution if an offer sounds too good to be true.”

Other scam victims include customers of the Fort Pierce, Fla., Utilities Authority; Kissimmee, Fla., Utility Authority; and Memphis, Tenn., Light, Gas and Water. Memphis in particular has had about 1,000 customers fall victim to the scam. The utility alerted local media and posted information on its website and social media sites when it first heard about the scam in May.

While the scams seem concentrated in just a few states, utilities across the country are urging customers to remain vigilant. Other utilities in Kentucky, Montana, New York, New Jersey and Washington have issued warnings. —CAITLIN MCDONNELL

Top 10 Tips to Save Energy and Money This Summer

Friday, July 6th, 2012

June 18, 2012 14:14

June 20th marks the first day of summer, and for many of us that means trips to the beach, outdoor concerts, and cool drinks. Summer is also a great season to save energy and money in your home. Here are some tips to get you started:

Lighting makes up about 10% of home electricity costs. You can save up to 80% of that energy by simply replacing your traditional incandescents with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). They will also last you for years after the summer is gone, saving money on replacements.

Another good reason to switch to energy efficient lighting choices is that it can lower your cooling costs. Only 10% of the energy from traditional bulbs is used for light—the rest is wasted as heat. By using CFLs and LEDs that give off less heat, you can reduce your need for air conditioning and save money.

If you plan to remodel your home, take advantage of the longer, sunnier days with daylighting. You can bring more sunlight in your home by upgrading to today’s highly energy-efficient windows and reduce the need for artificial lighting (and electricity!)

Another way to take advantage of the prolonged sunshine is to install outdoor solar lighting. They are easy to install, virtually maintenance free, and provide free electricity.

Switch to a high-efficiency air conditioner—you can reduce your energy use by 20% – 50% and save money.

Install a cool roof for your home. Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat—reducing your energy bills by decreasing cooling needs. For more on selecting cool roofs, read this guidance from our EERE Building Technologies program.

You can reduce your cooling costs with landscape shading. Planting trees, shrubs, and plants around your home strategically can reduce heat radiation and cool the air before it reaches your home’s walls and windows.

If you have a swimming pool, you can reduce your heating bills by installing a high efficiency or solar pool heater or using a pool cover. Read more about solar pool heating.

Enjoy the summer wind, get exercise, and save money by walking or biking to work instead of driving your car. If you have to drive, check out these tips to reduce the amount of gas you use.

By properly insulating and air sealing your home, you can reduce your air conditioning costs by keeping more of the cooling in your home. Read more about insulation and air sealing.

How to Check for a Water Leak

Thursday, July 5th, 2012
Follow these steps to find out if your system has sprung a leak

Finding water leaks can save you water, which means saving money on water and sewer bills. Follow these easy steps to determine if you have a leak in a domestic or a sprinkler irrigation system.

Step 1. Turn all water-using appliances off so that no water is being used. This means turning off all water inside and outside the house including showers, sinks, washing machines and any appliance that uses water. If you have a sprinkler irrigation system, turn off the controller and manually shut off the two valves at the double check valve assembly (DCVA) to isolate the irrigation system. (See photo.)

Water meter with red triangle leak indicator.

Watch the meter. Your meter will have a triangular red or silver and black round disc that is commonly called a “leak indicator.”

  • If it is spinning, you have a leak. If there is no indicator and the actual meter dial hand is moving, water is running somewhere in your system and you have a leak – go to step 3.
  • If the hand is not moving, note the position of the hand and wait 10 minutes. Check the meter again, if it has moved, you have a slow leak – go to step 3. If not, you do not have a leak.

shut-off valveStep. 3. Locate the main shut-off valve (see photo at left) to the house. This is usually located close to the meter box.

Step 4. Turn off the valve.

Step 5. Turn on a faucet inside the house to test.

  • If water still flows from the faucet after several seconds, the shut off valve is not working.
  • If no water flows through the faucet, the shut off valve is working. Return to the meter.

Step 6. Check if the meter’s leak indicators hand is moving.

  • If the leak indicator or dial hand is still moving, water is flowing between the meter and the shut-off valve. That means you have a leak between the meter and the customer-side shut-off valve.
  • If it is not moving, then you have a leak between the customer-side shut-off valve and possibly somewhere in the house. Check toilets, washing machines, faucets, etc., for any leak.
