Humidity in Winter

Dear Friend,

During the warmer months we all deal with too much humidity, but in the winter we would like to keep it up!  In this issue we go over some interesting information on humidifiers for your home and business.
Humidifiers
Do you suffer from dry skin, a scratchy throat, or lots of static electricity?  You may have a problem with low humidity.  When you run the heat in the winter you begin to reduce the humidity level.  Listed below are some common problems associated with dry air:
  • Your skin can feel dry and scratchy.
  • Your nasal passages can dry out; making you more susceptible to colds or the flu.
  • Static electricity is a direct result of dry air.
  • Hardwood floors can separate at the seams when the air is extremely dry as they lose moisture and contract.
  • Houseplants suffer.
  • Wallpaper can peel at the edges.
The solution to low humidity in the winter is to purchase or have a humidifier installed.  A humidifier is a machine that adds humidity to the air.  During heating season, the relative humidity indoors can get as low as 13% or lower. The desirable level of humidity is 30-35%.  Humidifiers come in a variety of designs, from floor and table models, to furnace/heat pump mounted units. Furnace/heat pump mounted units can be by-pass, steam, mist, wick, and powered. Some can be mounted in the ductwork while others can attached to the furnace/heat pump.  Installing a humidifier is an easy job if you're replacing your furnace, but you can also have a humidifier fitted to your current system.

You must watch that you do not add too much humidity to your home or business! Some idicators that the hunidity levels are too high are: frequent fogging of windows, moisture build-up or mold on closet walls or room ceilings and walls.
Warm Moist Air Vs. Cool Moist Air
humidifier Warm air humidifiers use a heating element to heat the water.  These humidifiers can use more electricity but, it is usually no more than boiling a kettle.  They can also make the air feel "muggy" if they are overused.  Cool air humidifiers do not heat the water so, there is no risk of getting burnt and are safer to use around children.  These units can use less electricity, can humidify a larger area, and do not make the air feel "muggy".  They do have a couple of disadvantages: they are generally noisier than warm air units and some require regular filter replacement.

There are 2 kinds of warm air humidifiers:

Steam/Vaporizer
These boil the water and send it out as steam and as a result mold and bacteria are killed during the boiling. There is a risk of burns and dangers with children.

Warm Mist
These are similar to the steam units in that the water is heated to make it evaporate.  These units cool the air slightly before releasing it therefore reducing the chance of burns.

There are 3 kinds of cool air humidifiers:

Evaporation Wick
A wick or filter is used to absorb water and is then evaporated by a fan.  This is a more natural form of evaporation.  As the humidity of the air increases, the evaporation rate will naturally slow, making these units, to a large extent, self regulating. One disadvantage is the persistent noise of a fan blowing.  Some people find this bothersome but, some prefer it!  They say the sound is relaxing, and even that it helps them sleep.

Impeller
A spinning disk in the water is what creates the mist. This process is generally a lot quieter than a fan.

Ultrasonic
These units are a more modern design; they use ultrasonic sound waves to vibrate the water and create a mist. They can be very efficient and almost silent to the human ear.
