What is That Weird Looking Thing?

Monday, March 31st, 2014

I was at my computer when this weird looking bug landed on my desk.  I took my coffee mug and smashed it. Then put it in the trash. After a while, I noticed that there was another one on my ceiling.

Time to go to the internet.

According to StopMSB “The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål), is a voracious eater that damages fruit, vegetable, and ornamental crops in North America. ” They hopped a boat from Asia. They have no known American natural predator, which is why they are spreading everywhere.  At first birds were not eating them, but scientists have started noticing that some birds are starting to eat them along with lizards.

These brown bugs can usually be found buzzing around lights, computer monitors or windows. They are looking for light and warmth. They come in through cracks in your windows and doors. Check your windows and doors, make sure  you seal around them with caulking. Also keep tree and shrub branches from touching your house. Keep firewood at least 20 feet away from the house.

To become a stink bug killing machine, you can try several things…

        1.  Over the counter pesticides. Read the label. Make sure that the chemical will kill stink bugs. Not all sprays and chemicals kill stink bugs.

       2.  Kill the bugs with dish washing detergent, bleach, or ammonia.    Fill a glass jar halfway with one of these chemicals. DO NOT mix these chemicals together! You can produce deadly fumes. You want to kill the bugs, not yourself.  Knock the stink bugs into the solution using tweezers, a popsicle stick or gloved hand.

      3. Kill the bug with wart remover. Buy a can of freeze away wart remover and spray it directly on the stink bug. The bug will freeze instantly and all you need to do is flush them down the toilet.

      4. Use a nicotine solution. Soak a pack of shredded cigarettes in 1 gallon (4 liters) of warm water. Strain the solution and mix in 2 Tbsp (30 ml) of dish detergent.

  • Fill a spray bottle with this solution and thoroughly coat the stink bug with it.
  • The liquid dish detergent allows the solution to stick to the insect more effectively, and the nicotine poisons the stink bug.
  • Wear disposable gloves as you work with the nicotine solution to avoid accidentally absorbing the poison through your skin.

    5. Vacuum them. When you have vacuumed all the bugs you can see, make sure you empty the bag into a plastic bag.  Seal up the bag so the bugs can not escape. Dispose the bag of bugs outside in your trash can.
    6. Glue Traps:  If you don’t have small children or pets, you can lay out glue traps in your windowsills, near vents, and doors. When the glue trap is full, seal them in a plastic bag and throw the bag away.

Springing into Sunshine and Produce

Friday, February 7th, 2014

As Spring quickly approaches, the sun shines, and the weather gets warmer, we feel a strong urge to be outside and breathe in fresh air. Tending to a garden is a great way to get the recommended amounts of Vitamin D, exercise, and fresh produce. If you’re a beginner, here are a few tips to get you started:

1. You can purchase a pre-made raised bed or spend a weekend building your own using a DIY kit found online. Ideally, each bed should be 4 feet by 4 feet. These dimensions make every plant in the bed accessible from all sides, plus it’s a perfect size for beginners. Use cardboard or wood boards as the base layer, then mulch, compost, and nutrient-rich soil on top.

2. There are tools online at websites like gardeners.com to help you map out where to plant the particular fruit, herbs, and veggies you choose. Plug in the dimensions of your raised bed, pick your plants, and let it do the think-work for you.

3. Choose your plants wisely. Tomatoes, lettuce, and pole beans grow well in a small garden. Regardless what you plant, learn the needs and requirements for sun and water before you plant. Soon, you and your family will be eating what you grow!

Consider a rain water barrel  with a rain chain and a compost bin while you do additional research for raised beds. If you’re a raised bed gardener seasoned pro, please pass along a tip to us!

Do I really need a SuperTune on my Air Conditioner?

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

Questions.  Do you change the oil in your car? Do you check the fluids like the transmission, brake, power steering, check your tires?  Most people check these things as least once or twice a year or they have it checked when they have their oil changed.  Why? To make sure their car is running correctly and efficiently. If your car is out of oil or transmission fluid, you’ll find yourself without a running vehicle.heat pump, heating, heating and air conditioning,

It’s the same with your air conditioner/heat pump. There are moving parts in your air conditioner needs to be cleaned and inspected.

Up to 50% of your home’s energy bill is from  your heating/ air conditioning/heat pump system. If it’s not running correctly, you’re loosing money to the power company.

          Save Your Money!

  • FACT: Dirty blowers and coils can cause your utility bill to increase by 35%.
  • FACT: If you have to add refrigerant to your air conditioning system that means you have a leak. You are damaging the environment. It costs money to add refrigerant.
  • FACT: Keeping your system clean can extend the life of the equipment, saving you money from replacing it.
  • FACT: 80% of all compressor failures could have been avoided if a proper maintenance had been performed.

Having a SuperTune on your air conditioning/heat pump system, which at the time may sound like a waste of money, but it will actually save you money in the long run.  By administering a preventative maintenance plan on your ac/ heat pump  system on a regular, yearly basis it allows you to be aware of your heating and cooling / heat pump system at all times.AC and Heating

Performing a SuperTune check on your system annually can help you identify problems such as rust, rot, frayed wires, leaks and corroded electrical contacts.  It is important to do a SuperTune on your air conditioner/ heat pump unit at a minimum of one time per year to ensure your unit is operating at peak efficiency which can save you up to 30% on your electrical bill.

Certain components within a air conditioning system require immediate attention upon irregular operation.

Condenser Coils can become clogged by dust, dirt, pollen and other debris. Because of clogging, the condenser coil loses its ability to pull heat from your system. In turn, it causes the compressor to pull higher amps causing a higher electric bill.

Dirty filters and evaporator coils which deliver conditioned air into your establishment can cause the evaporator coil to starve for air. Each evaporator coil is designed for a specific volume of air to ensure adequate operation.

dirty air filter Due to the lack of maintenance and knowledge about your cooling system, things such as dirty coils and filters can mean premature failure of your heating and air conditioning/ heat pump unit’s compressor, condenser fan and other system components. In other words, a malfunction of a component within your HVAC system can over-work your unit.

Replacement of an entire heating and cooling unit can be costly. When a heating and air conditioning/ heat pump unit is replaced, it is recommended to replace the duct work in its entirety to ensure no leakage throughout your duct work system.

Choosing a SuperTune/preventative maintenance plan that best fits you and your system is the best option to avoid replacing your entire  air conditioning/ heat pump system.

Our valuable customers of more than 8 years, Phil and Dianna Pipkin, turned their love of barbeque and a dream they had to serve it into a reality. Located in east Tennessee, Phil’s Dream Pit was established in February 2008 after the opportunity arose for them to have their own restaurant.

“The building we are in had been vacant for a year, Phil drove past it everyday going to work and one day stopped to talk to the owner,” Dianna said. “We felt if we didn’t give this dream a try now we never would have another opportunity.”

At Phil’s Dream Pit, you can get all kinds of mouth-watering barbeque cuisine as well as all the fixings to go with it. Located conveniently at 534 Eastern Star Rd in Kingsport, TN, customers are invited to stop in for lunch or dinner as well as taking advantage of their catering services.

Phil and Dianna attribute the restaurant’s success to God. “Our business has been hard work.” Dianna said, “But all the glory for our success goes to our wonderful father, GOD, who continues to bless us everyday.”

When they’re not busy serving tasty dishes, Phil enjoys playing the guitar for his church’s praise team and Dianna finds enjoyment in reading. They also enjoy the company of their four cats, Cali, Casper, Felix and Sissy.

5 Ways to Prepare your Plumbing for Freezing Weather.

Wednesday, January 1st, 2014

Inside Plumbing

1. Insulate pipes that are located in unheated areas such as in the crawl space, attic, garage, or basement. You can use insulating tape or molded pipe sleeve and wrap it over the entire length of the exposed pipe. Cover all valves, pipe fittings, etc… with insulating tape or fiberglass.

2. Open cabinet doors in your kitchen and bathrooms. Water lines that supply kitchens and bathrooms are frequently located in outside walls. If there are any air leaks in siding or insulation it can cause the pipes to freeze. Leaving your cabinet doors open when the temperature is below freezing allows the pipes behind the cabinets to get more heat.

3.  If you are going out of town shut off and drain your water system especially if you will be gone for several days. Make sure you turn off your water heater before draining your system! Leaving your furnace or heat pump on a low setting helps, but may not prevent freezing. Turn off your main shut off valve then go through the house and turn on all faucets, sinks, tubs, showers, etc… and flush your toilets. Meanwhile go back and remove the plug from the valve so that it can drain completely. Make sure when you are done that you retighten the valve and shut off all faucets.

4. Because your water heater works harder in the wintertime, you can flush out your water heater to remove sediment buildup that causes corrosion that will shorten the life span and reduces heating efficiency.

5. Keep a constant temperature both day and night. Don’t turn your thermostat down at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

If you do have a frozen pipe:

  • keep the faucet open. As the frozen pipe and  area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
