BASICS NEEDS IN ANY LANDSCAPE – Design 101

Englewood Logo withphone number

Balance – Continuity – Repetition – Scale

Contrast - Leaf Textures – Mix conifer (needle) with broad leaf, course surface with smooth, small leaf with large leaves.

Mix shades of green leaves, different shaped plants add contrast too.

IMPORTANT!  Is it Cold Hardy? Read the label.  Plants to Zone 6 for the Tri- Cities although there are a few exceptions and our areas have some warm “microclimate” pockets and certain plants can live for a few years, it’s better to keep to Zone 6 or below.

A few plants that are being “slipped in” that are fooling some people are Gardenias, Acuba, Indian Hawthorn, Some Camellias that prefer warmer zone, Pampas Grass.

“How Big Does It Get”?

Most commonly found plants grow larger than we need for the desired area.

There are “True” Dwarfs but typically to small for our immediate needs or more than we are willing to pay.

A better question might be: How small can I keep it looking good for 10 years?

Most Broad Leaf Evergreens and plants that loose their foliage are easily kept smaller.

Warning! Constant shearing creates a refuge for many insects that may cause problems

Right Plant, Right Spot – Know your conditions where you “plan” to plant.

Know where north is. What sun exposure is the area that you plan to plant . Will it be under a large tree or overhang of a structure? What is your soil Type? Is it a low wet area, hard clay, sandy or rich topsoil? You may need to work in organic matter into the soil.

Watch for wind tunnels between buildings or on top of a hill.

What are “resistant” plants?  It is natural for plants to get some insects but many imported plants (not native) may get more than you want to deal with. Ask for Natives. There is a movement in our industry called “Proven Winners” these are plants that have stood the test of time. These plants require little to no chemicals and can handle extremes such as extra hot or cold temperatures, droughts ect. “Right Plant, Right Spot”

Proper Cultural Practices Helps Prevent Insects and Disease – IPM

Not enough Mulch or To Much – causes stress or rots the bark

Most plants like to get Air flow with select pruning instead of shearing

Planting 101 – #1 mistake is planting to deep or piling soil on top of roots

I.P.M. Integrated Pest Management – Reduce or eliminate chemical dependency

10 Ways to Go Green this Spring

Friday, May 11th, 2012

1-Plant a Garden-even if you just have a sunny windowsill, you can have a garden. I
recently learned that lettuces do well in pots, so get out there & get your hands dirty! The Washington County Extension office in Jonesborough offers a ton of resources & they have knowledgeable staff to answer your questions.

2-Raise Chickens-Yes! Johnson City recently decided to allow hens within the city limits, so now’s the time to try your hand at bird-raising. I recommend talking with an experienced chicken-owner, but there are lots of books out there at our local libraries.

3-Start a compost pile-Even if you don’t garden, a compost pile is a great way to “go green”. So much of our landfill waste is kitchen waste, yard waste (like grass clippings) and compostable paper. Reduce your footprint on this earth by turning this back into soil, right in your own back yard! Again, the Extension office & the Library have great resources about composting!

4-Buy a travel mug.  According to Renee Loux, in her book “Easy Green Living”, Americans threw away 14.4 billion paper coffee cups in 2005.  This is a significant source of waste!

5-Learn to cook at home.  This decreases your carbon footprint, because you aren’t using a vehicle to get to the restaraunt, it saves money for other good things, and you can buy organic, and you KNOW what’s in your food!

6-Shop at local farmers’ markets.  We are fortunate in this area to have several great markets.  Johnson City, and Jonesborough markets have been going strong for years.  One just opened at ETSU, and there’s a new one beginning in Blountville.  There are also wonderful treasures to be found at roadside stands.

7-Buy directly from the farmer, when you can.  It’s important to know where our food comes from.  The Cows are Out Dairy delivers here at the studio on Mondays.  She brings raw milk and grass-fed beef.  To learn more, visit them on facebook.

8-Re-use-look for little things that mght have another use.  You never know until you change your thinking.  I recently saved a mixed-nut container from the trash, and it’s now used for nuts & washers in the basement!  Our grandparents knew the value of “Waste not, Want not!”

9-Buy from the bulk bins.  Even if you just need a small amount, less packaging means less waste.

10-Learn to preserve foods.  This is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  Freezing food is the easiest method, but pickling, canning, freezing & even cellaring are great fun.  My favorite resource is the Ball Blue Book of Canning & Preserving, which you can usually find cheaply this time of year. Holston Habitat for Humanity Needs Help

Be Sure You Get the Right Fence for your Needs

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

When it comes to an investment for your home or business, you definitely want to do your homework. Price is always a factor, but be sure to keep style and quality of materials in mind as well.
Not all fencing is created equal, and that’s a good thing. The fact is a chain link fence for use as a dog kennel doesn’t need to be at the same level as a chain link fence surrounding a power transformer. When getting estimates for your job, make sure the products specified are right for your project.
With wood fences, pressure treated lumber is going to give you many years of service. Cedar is also a very attractive alternative. It costs a little more on the front end, but will save much more money over the course of time.
Vinyl or PVC fencing is also another great alternative. Vinyl fences provide years of virtually maintenance free service. There is a wide variety of types and styles available to fit your needs. Picket, privacy and ranch style fences are all available in vinyl material. Careful consideration should be given to purpose and yard conditions when thinking about having a vinyl fence installed.
Chain link fences are probably one of the most economical and secure fence styles available. Chain link can be used to secure everything from your children and pets to commercial and industrial properties and equipment. A chain link fence can also be an attractive addition to your lawn. It is available as a standard galvanized mesh or in a variety of colors such as black, brown and green. You can even custom order colors like white, red and blue, for your unique application.
It’s also important to make sure the installation meets your needs. Sharp Fence Company prides itself in providing the highest quality installation services by experienced, skilled technicians. We are so confident in our installation processes that we offer each of our customers a standard 24 month warranty on installation workmanship.
At Sharp Fence Company, every job is custom. We specify the material that fits the customer’s needs. You can be sure that whatever we specify is a quality product that will provide you with years of service.
Call us today. We will give you an estimate tailored specifically to your project and answer any questions you might have – all with no obligation.
